Almost everyone, regardless of religion, prays. Some people pray all the time! Even though prayer is a common practice for all people, most of us struggle with some big questions in regard to prayer. We wonder if it makes a difference. We wonder if God even listens. We wonder why sometimes God says "no." In Matthew 7, Jesus tackles all three of these big questions and gives us some hopeful answers!

There is one thing that none of us can ever seem to get away from and that is criticism. No matter what we do or where we go, it seems like everyone has a critique. Why, we even critique ourselves on a regular basis. It’s human to be critical but Jesus warns us in our passage today that as His followers, we need to strive for something different!

Who do you want to be when you’re 80? What sort of legacy do you want to leave? I’ll bet you’re like most people, you want to leave a legacy of generosity and kindness and love, not just a legacy of accumulation. If you had to guess, how many times a day do you have a conversation with someone about money? 5 times a day? 10 times a day? More? Most people talk about money all the time. With all kinds of people. Even though we talk about it all the time, there’s something odd about discussing money in church. In the Sermon on the Mount, however, Jesus breaks the financial taboo and dives right into this incredibly important subject.

There are few things harder in life than forgiving someone when they hurt you. When we have been wronged, our natural selves want to lash out and seek justice and receive satisfaction. Sometimes our hearts want to hang on to the hurt and refuse to let go. Jesus tells us in the Sermon on the Mount that His followers must be different. We must forgive because we have been forgiven. As they say, “forgiven people forgive people!”
