No matter how much you have, it never seems to be enough. Ever wonder why that is? Why do our bills always rise to the level of our income, no matter how much income we have? Why does it seem like most of us can never really get ahead of the curve? Jesus tells us there is one big reason we struggle and it has nothing to do with the economy or our paychecks!

If you had to guess, how many times a day do you have a conversation with someone about money? 5 times a day? 10 times a day? More? Most people talk about money all the time. With all kinds of people. Even though we talk about it all the time, there’s something odd about discussing money in church. In the Sermon on the Mount, however, Jesus breaks the financial taboo and dives right into this incredibly important subject.

There are few things harder in life than forgiving someone when they hurt you. When we have been wronged, our natural selves want to lash out and seek justice and receive satisfaction. The Lord’s Prayer may be one of the most memorized and quoted passage of scripture in the whole entire Bible. It’s spoken aloud in churches all over the world every Sunday. It’s shown up in horror movies, novels and TV shows for decades. Even people who don’t go to church very often usually know some of the phrases to this prayer. That familiarity, however, can often lead to misunderstanding and even contempt, where the words become empty phrases we just recite. Jesus, however, would have us dig in and really understand this prayer so that it may truly change us and our hearts.

Life in the Kingdom - Prayer

The theologian Scot McKnight once said, “prayer is as human as breathing” and I think there’s a lot of truth in that. Most everyone, regardless of religion or lack thereof, prays…or at least has prayed. There’s something in us that feels the need to reach out in prayer, even if we’re not sure who or what is “out there” to hear the prayers. Even with this innate drive to pray, there is a lot of confusion and questions when it comes to prayer. Fortunately, Jesus gives us some guidance right here in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.
