DEVOTED to the Word

Right after the church launched at Pentecost, we read in Acts 2 about what those first disciples of Jesus did to become who Jesus wanted them to be. They were devoted to certain things and the first element of their devotion was a devotion to the Word. To be a disciple means we have to dig in deep into the Bible and start eating meat, not just drinking milk.

Becoming a follower of Jesus is not simply about agreeing to certain faith statements or accepting some theological concepts. It’s about a whole-life change the Bible called discipleship. This week, we talk about the differences between casual Christians and committed Christians and what it might mean to be truly devoted to the way of Jesus.

As we get ready to step into a brand-new year, we often get so focused on what we want to change and do different that we forget about what we need to leave behind. Often the things that derail us the most from moving forward are not failure to plan or unrealistic goals. What often impedes our progress is the baggage from the past that we never left behind. Love - Gift Exchange

Joy - Gift Exchange

One of the most popular Christmas songs of all time is Joy to the World. It’s a great song and there are about 1,000 different versions out there. You’re probably singing it right now just hearing the title…it’s that popular! One of the reasons it’s so popular is because this time of year we all want joy, don’t we? But what happens when joy is in short supply? What happens when this year has been hard and joy is nowhere to be seen? How does Jesus make a difference in that situation?

At Christmas we use the word “peace” a lot. It shows up in songs and on Christmas cards and even in scriptures, but how many of us are experiencing that peace today? How many of us feel “at peace” this holiday season? There are many programs and plans out there to help you “find peace” but maybe peace isn’t a process or program…maybe peace is a person!

One of the most popular holiday traditions out there right now is the gift exchange. What’s great about the gift exchange is that if you open a gift you don’t want, you can trade it for something different and, hopefully, better. Because of Jesus, we have an opportunity to exchange our despair and our anxiety and grief for hope, peace, and joy. Because of Jesus we can participate in a gift exchange that matters for eternity!

There’s an old cliché that says life is a journey and it’s an old cliché for a reason. That’s because it’s true! Life is a journey and one that’s full of twists and turns and even detours. In the story of Ruth, we see a powerful truth about this journey – The life of the godly is not a straight line to glory. It’s full of twists and turns but ultimately, we make it!

Rahab, The Sinner - The Table

There are many unique figures in Jesus family tree. Few are more unique than a Canaanite woman named Rahab. Most bibles, especially the older ones, don’t just call her Rahab. They call her Rahab the Prostitute or Rahab the Harlot. She was not someone who normally got invited to family dinners. She was a sinner of the worst kind. But because of her faith and because of the grace of God, even this sinner has a seat at the table!

Have you ever felt invisible? Like you didn’t matter or that no one cared if you were there or not? Most of us have had these kinds of feelings or fears in our life.
